Community Garden Update: Warm Weather and Sprouting Vegetables
The late spring snowfall that dusted the vegetable garden two weeks prior was a distant memory and we were getting into summer mode. As temperatures rose, Montanans came out of hibernation, and we got antsy to get moving. Besides tending our plots at the community garden, our summertime activities began. Hiking season started with trails on Columbia Mountain, Avalanche Lake, and McDonald Creek.
Finally warm enough to cycle, we took the opportunity to bike to the garden. Nestled in the foothills of the mountains, the hilly streets of Columbia Falls can be a cycling challenge. Speeding down the road to the garden is a pleasure, but riding back up is a different story.
Arriving at the garden and looking around, we saw the ground bursting forth and turning bright green. Summer was still a few days away, but we were confident that warm weather was here to stay...at least for a few months.
During our visits to the garden, aside from watering and picking weeds, we check the progress and admire fellow gardeners plots. It's hard not to compare. We're only human, after all! Looking at their creative plot designs and thriving plants sometimes makes you question your own green thumb. Do they know something we don't?
Our pumpkins and carrots had germinated, and our bush beans and spinach were well established. The tomato plants no longer needed to be covered, and even our potatoes were coming up.
Our community chores of mowing and trimming were completed and we were happy with the progress of our garden.

Eileen waters our garden. The garden south of ours shows a productive start of onions and potatoes. |
