Spiced Banana Green Smoothie

A green smoothie- the tantalizing convergence of salad, sweetness, and nutrition that's best served in a clear glass that showcases the green hue that makes these smoothies such a novel treat.

If you're new to green smoothies, this recipe is a great place to start. The sweetness of banana and juicy grapes are augmented by the richness of spinach and is given a bit of bite with a sprinkle of three spices.

Spiced Banana Green Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • At least 1/3 cup of milk. This could be soy, almond, goat, cow's milk, or even half and half.
  • 1-2 cups of fresh spinach (preferably from the garden)
  • A ripe frozen banana, though an unfrozen one will work, the frozen banana eliminates the need to add ice to cool the smoothie, which often dilutes some of the flavor or adds an icy element to the smoothie.
  • 1/2 cup of grapes (optional)
  • Sprinkle of each of the following: ground ginger, cinnamon, and nutmeg

Instructions:

Freeze the banana. This will take about 3-4 hours or overnight.

Rinse and tear the spinach.

Pour the milk into the blender, then add the next three ingredients (banana, spinach, and grapes) and carefully blend until creamy.

Add more milk until your smoothie reaches your desired consistency.

You may either blend in the spices or sprinkle them on top as an attractive garnish.

When using all two cups of fresh spinach and 1/2 a cup of cow's milk, this smoothie provides:

Fiber: 5.7g or 23% of the RDA
Protein: 7.6g- almost as much as in a serving of peanut butter, which has 8g.
Vitamin A: 115% of the RDA
Vitamin C: 52% of the RDA
Iron: 13% of the RDA
