Community Garden Update: Powdery Mildew
Towards the end of August, a menace struck the pumpkin patch and many other leafy plants in our area: powdery mildew.
This mildew thrives in mild temperatures and humidity- so our warm, wet fall was the perfect environment for these damaging fungi.
Our pumpkins had been growing beautifully all summer long, so it was critical that they receive immediate treatment. In accordance with the organic-only policy of the community garden, we sprayed the poor pumpkins with a good dose of Neem oil.
Fortunately, the pumpkins made it out just fine. By harvest-time, we had 37 healthy pumpkins, unaffected by the infection in August.
