Grow Edible Flowers

Grow yourself an edible flower garden!

Flowers look nice and add a softer, more natural ambience wherever they blossom. They can be planted in a pot, which means that they’ll grow essentially anywhere and don’t require a garden or even a yard.

But they aren’t only pleasant to the eyes: many flowers are edible, so they’re just as important a garden staple as tomatoes and lettuce.

Candied flowers add a great touch to cupcakes, candies, and other confections, while plain petals and flowers bring a sprightly flavor to salads, soups, and anything else that you can dream up.

Flowers that are safe to eat include:

Nasturtium

This peppery-flavored flower complements savory dishes like omelettes and other egg dishes, as well as salads and cheese.

Pansies

Pansies have an interesting color scheme and mild, sweet flavor that works well as a garnish on cupcakes, sliced in butter, infused into popsicles, and in conjunction with other sweet flavors.

Calendula

Calendula is a bright yellow flower that’s been long known for its healing properties and has been historically named “poor man’s saffron” because it transmits a yellow color to the food with which it is cooked.

Dandelions

Young dandelion flowers taste like mushrooms when fried in butter, while their bitter leaves can be used in salads.

Chive Flowers

The green stalk of the chives are delicious, onion-like herbs, and their purple flowers can be used as well. The flowers taste like a slightly milder version of the stalk.

The list, however, does not end there. There are many other flowers that are completely safe to eat that will add spice to your culinary life.
